In 1873, a young William Murdoch and his sister fled their cruel and abusive father. Twenty-two years later, Detective Murdoch takes on the most personal case of his career when his estranged father, awaiting execution for murder, calls on his son to investigate the case and prove his innocence.

Meanwhile, his sister is on her deathbed, and Murdoch learns she has been harbouring a secret from their childhood.
