ABOUT

The fourth volume in the Bullpen Books series, this oversized 10" x 14" hardcover edition is a stunning collection of iconic covers, full issues, and original art reproduced from Marvel’s archival scans, alongside a new essay, commentary, and a new introduction.

The X-Men is one of the bestselling comics series of all time, featuring one of the best-loved super-hero teams in the Marvel Universe. This oversized hardcover volume, the fourth in the Bullpen Books series, focuses on the iconic 1970s X-Men era by Len Wein, Chris Claremont, and Dave Cockrum, including Giant-Size X-Men #1 (the first appearances of Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Thunderbird) and X-Men #101. It also includes the equally iconic Uncanny X-Men #137 (“The Death of Phoenix”) and “Days of Future Past” in Uncanny X-Men #141–#142 by Chris Claremont and John Byrne.

This is a stunning collection of covers, original art, and full issues reproduced from black-and-white line art and original art, accompanied by a new essay by Chris Ryall and John Lind that details these legendary creators and their enduring contributions to the X-Men legacy, as well as caption commentary and a new introduction.

Dark Horse’s Bullpen Books series showcases characters and creators integral to Marvel Comics history. This volume follows the previous three Bullpen titles, The Art of the Amazing Spider-Man, The Art of Fantastic Four, and The Art of the Mighty Thor.

STANDARD, PRIMARY, DM AND VARIANT COVERS

Standard and Primary covers are widely available through general retailers. They often have higher print runs and can be cheaper, especially during sales.

In contrast, Direct Market (DM) and variant covers are primarily sold in comic shops. DM editions tend to have more limited availability and may be more valuable to collectors.

The main differences lie in artwork style, availability, price, and collector appeal. Ultimately, the choice between standard and variant covers depends on personal preference, budget, and individual collecting goals.

PRODUCT TYPES

Comic book enthusiasts have various formats to choose from when collecting their favorite stories.
Here's a brief overview of the main types:

  • Higher price point, often €100-€150

Oversized Hardcover (OHC)

  • Similar dimensions to omnibus, but thinner
  • Collect shorter runs or story arcs
  • Usually 300-600 pages
  • Priced between €30-€50

Hardcover (HC)

  • Standard-sized hardcover books
  • Collect 6-12 issues typically
  • Similar dimensions to single issues, but with a hard cover
  • Priced around €25-€35

Trade Paperback (TP)

  • Softcover collections
  • Standard comic book size
