ABOUT

Secrets, ambition, and a decades-old murder converge in this richly layered noir novel about the hidden legacy of Black women who served in World War II and the enduring costs of racial passing, loyalty, and truths that refuse to stay buried—by the acclaimed author of The American Daughters.

In 1984, Detective Rue is the only Black woman on the New Orleans detective squad when the corpse of Aubrey Fiorello, one-time mayoral candidate and philanthropist turned decades-unsolved missing persons case, is finally discovered. To her shock, none other than Doris Barnes, Fiorello’s old housekeeper and a locally celebrated Black World War II heroine, comes forward to claim responsibility.

In the 1940s, fiercely independent Doris joins the Women’s Army Corps to escape from her overbearing mother. After a chance encounter, Doris falls in love with fellow soldier and New Orleans favorite son Aubrey Fiorello while they are deployed abroad. But Aubrey harbors a secret that threatens everything his family has built. Unwilling to brave the truth, Doris and Aubrey part ways.

Years later, they reunite in the aftermath of the war. Navigating the segregation of Jim Crow–era New Orleans, Doris and Aubrey struggle to maintain a love that could get them both killed. As Aubrey’s political star rises, Doris must ask herself: How can one Black woman square her personal duty to herself and her dreams with her obligation to her community? And what are the sacrifices she is willing to make for love?

STANDARD, PRIMARY, DM AND VARIANT COVERS

Standard and Primary covers are widely available through general retailers. They often have higher print runs and can be cheaper, especially during sales.

In contrast, Direct Market (DM) and variant covers are primarily sold in comic shops. DM editions tend to have more limited availability and may be more valuable to collectors.

The main differences lie in artwork style, availability, price, and collector appeal. Ultimately, the choice between standard and variant covers depends on personal preference, budget, and individual collecting goals.
