ABOUT
Big cities are known for their impressive architecture and bustling activity. But even those with green spaces like parks aren’t particularly known for their wildlife.
Chicago is working to change that.
The eponymous "Wild Mile” is a grassroots project dedicated to turning the North Branch Canal section of the Chicago River from an industrial waterway into a thriving ecosystem of floating islands, dedicated wildlife habitat, and boardwalks that invite the community to experience an explosion of nature in their own neighborhood.
This accessible STEM title, written in Alison Pearce Stevens’s signature engaging narrative voice, unpacks the concept of urban rewilding by taking readers into the heart of Chicago as the canal is transformed into a vibrant green space. The book is illustrated with full-color photographs taken by the author, featuring the Wild Mile in various stages of progress, the people who helped build it, and the critters who have made it their home since its earliest pieces were installed (look out for a big snapping turtle the locals have named Chonkasaurus!). The book’s final chapter broadens its focus through an overview of other urban rewilding projects underway worldwide.

STANDARD, PRIMARY, DM AND VARIANT COVERS
Standard and Primary covers are widely available through general retailers. They often have higher print runs and can be cheaper, especially during sales.
In contrast, Direct Market (DM) and variant covers are primarily sold in comic shops. DM editions tend to have more limited availability and may be more valuable to collectors.
The main differences lie in artwork style, availability, price, and collector appeal. Ultimately, the choice between standard and variant covers depends on personal preference, budget, and individual collecting goals.
